The Stanley cup craze has come to the Delta Center

Two of Utahns’ favorite brands are partnering up. The Utah Jazz and Stanley, the now-trending mug company, announced a new multi-year sponsorship on Wednesday that will see various Stanley products with Jazz branding sold within the Delta Center. While Stanley has existed for over a century, the company has recently seen sales spike as social media influencers and celebrities have started using or endorsing the big “Quencher” cup. The trend started in Utah as bloggers picked up the mugs. Stanley revenues multiplied from $73 million in 2019 to $750 million in 2023. Stanley sales have caused chaos in some stores, including overnight lines outside of Targets when the company began selling its Starbucks’ branded cups there. This week, Saturday Night Live parodied the trend with their “Big Dumb Cups” sketch. Recently, social media has also criticized the cups for containing lead underneath the steel insulation layer. The Jazz’s game against the Bucks on Sunday, Feb. 4 may see inc

Commentary: The church needs to play a positive role in this year’s presidential election

Hình ảnh
This year’s U.S. presidential election is going to be of historic importance for America and the world, and the Catholic Church in the United States is uniquely positioned to help foster nonpartisan conversation. By Catholic Church, I do not mean just Catholic bishops. All Catholic citizens, and even ex-Catholics, can make a difference. Catholics are important because there are lots of them. They are Democrats and Republicans, and some of them are swing voters. Catholics make up 21.4% of the U.S. population (12.6% are white Catholics, 8.6% Hispanic Catholics), according to the Public Religion Research Institute . Another 13% of adult Americans are ex-Catholics, according to the Pew Research Center . Altogether, that is about a third of the country. By numbers alone, Catholics matter, but in addition many of them are in battleground states . A majority of Catholics usually vote for the winner in presidential elections. From 1928 to 1968, Catholics voted solidly Democratic in presi

Opinion: America must face up to Israel’s extremism

Two far-right members of Israel’s Cabinet — the national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, and the finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich — caused an international uproar this week with their calls to depopulate the Gaza Strip. “If in Gaza there will be 100,000 or 200,000 Arabs and not 2 million the entire conversation on ‘the day after’ will look different,” said Smotrich, who called for most civilians in Gaza to be resettled in other countries. The war, said Ben-Gvir, presents an “opportunity to concentrate on encouraging the migration of the residents of Gaza,” facilitating Israeli settlement in the region. The Biden administration has joined countries all over the world in condemning these naked endorsements of ethnic cleansing. But in doing so, it acted as if Ben-Gvir and Smotrich’s provocations are fundamentally at odds with the worldview of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to whom America continues to give unconditional backing. In a statement denouncing the ministers’ words as

Small plane crashes through ice at Pineview Reservoir

A small plane has crashed into the Pineview Reservoir near Huntsville Friday, with photos showing just the tail appearing above the ice. Officials in Weber County say the crash occurred just before 1 p.m. and that the pilot and a passenger were able to safely get out of the plane and were not injured. “This is the first actual plane crash into Pineview in my 25-year career,” said Weber County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Colby Ryan. “Just as the pilot and only passenger were getting out of the water onto the ice, they were able to walk to shore where medical crews treated them for cold exposure.” An eyewitness says he saw the plane flying overhead at around 12:15 p.m. and said it appeared to have skids on the front gear, but he did not see the plane land. It’s not known if the plane landed on the ice intentionally or if it was an emergency landing. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the FAA and the Department of Forest Service. Utah Eats: How a bartender views mocktails, and ACME Bar closes for remodeling

Hình ảnh
This article is reprinted from the Utah Eats newsletter, compiled by Kolbie Peterson, The Salt Lake Tribune’s food and drink reporter. To get the newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday, become a subscriber by going to sltrib.com/newsletters . Hello, Eaters! Eric Lewis, a bartender at Salt Lake City’s Bar X, says he’s seen a lot more people ordering mocktails lately — and not just because of Dry January. Lewis says many of those ordering nonalcoholic drinks are millennials or in Gen Z, aiming to “refurbish” their relationship with alcohol after overindulging at home during COVID-19. Lewis, who also has worked as a bartender in his home state of Indiana, said that “Utah, and Salt Lake in particular, has a pretty rich history of soda fountains, soda shops and ‘dirty sodas.’ … So there’s already a big nondrinking contingent in Salt Lake that is pretty prevalent, and has been around for a long time.” That influence, he said, is “something that, being in this city in particular, has

Police kill a Bluffdale man who reportedly pointed a gun at them

Police shot and killed a Bluffdale man on Wednesday after, they said, he pointed a gun at them during a medical call. According to the Saratoga Springs Police Department, which provides police service to Bluffdale, first responders were called to a home near 15000 South and Castle Valley Drive (3250 West) at about 8:30 a.m. because of a reported medical emergency. When paramedics and police officers contacted a man in a basement bedroom, he reportedly raised a handgun and pointed it at them. Three officers fired their guns at the man, whose name has not been released, hitting him multiple times. He was taken to Riverton Hospital, where he died a short time later. No one else was injured. Police did not say if the man fired his gun, or how many times the officers fired their weapons at him. Three Saratoga Springs police officers were placed on paid leave while the shooting is investigated. This was the second police shooting in Utah this year, according to a database maintained by

Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith unveil bid to build new arena, bring NHL team to Utah

For about a year now, Smith Entertainment Group and the National Hockey League have been publicly flirting with one another — with Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith stating his desire for hockey in Utah , and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman acknowledging the interest . On Wednesday, Smith officially proposed. SEG has formally requested the NHL “initiate an expansion process” that would bring another hockey franchise to Utah. That proposal includes plans to build a new arena in Utah. The Smith group has had conversations with NHL leadership over the last few months that have recently accelerated the process. Still, it’s not clear if or when the NHL would choose to come to Utah — the decision on whether to expand the league is ultimately made by the 32 NHL owners. SEG’s public announcement Wednesday, though, shows the group is confident in earning a team. In particular, the group says that it would be immediately able to host an NHL team in Salt Lake City, using the Delta Center before buildi

Park City Mountain gondola approved after resort makes $1.5M payment for ski bus service

Park City Mountain and owner Vail Resorts celebrated a win earlier this month when the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission unanimously recommended approving permits for the resort to build its Sunrise Gondola. Though all Park City Mountain pass holders will have access to the $27-million lift, which features 10-person cabs, it is expected to mostly be used by visitors and residents based at the Pendry Residences Park City, the Lift Hotel and the Hyatt Centric. Utah transgender bill threatens millions in federal funds for sexual assault, domestic violence services

Hình ảnh
Each year, thousands of Utahns subjected to sexual assault and domestic violence find shelter, emotional support and legal help at crisis centers throughout the state. But a new bill that would keep transgender people from accessing those services in Utah could lead to many of the already resource-starved facilities losing millions of dollars. For some of the state’s service providers, that could mean losing as much as 70% of their budget. In fiscal 2023, Utah’s Office for Victims of Crime received nearly $17 million in federal funding to provide care to those victims. After changing the legal definitions of “female” and “male” to exclude transgender people , Morgan Republican Rep. Kera Birkeland’s “ Sex-based Designations for Privacy, Anti-bullying and Women’s Opportunities, ” or HB257, would bar them from entering sex-specific spaces. That segregation of trans people from spaces aligning with their gender identity goes beyond restrooms and locker rooms, as it also includes “tempor

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicates new Orem Temple

Hình ảnh
The Orem Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated on Sunday, marking “a milestone in the progress of the kingdom of God on the Earth, and particularly in this vital part of his vineyard,” said apostle D. Todd Christofferson . Latter-day Saints view a temple as a House of the Lord, a place where the faithful participate in their religion’s highest ordinances, including eternal marriage. At Sunday’s dedication, Christofferson urged church members to attend the new temple to become closer to God and find answers to their questions. “What had seemed overwhelming and impossible can, with the Lord’s help, find resolution,” Christofferson said, “and we are more certain of his help. … In short, with our time in the temple we have been refined, even if only in a small degree, and heaven is that much closer.”' The three-story, 71,998-square-foot temple is now the 17th currently operating in Utah, joining Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Jordan Ri

Senate Bill 91 — Municipal Officers Compensation Amendments (Sen. Chris Wilson, R-Logan). Under the provisions of this bill, a city council would be required to hold a separate public hearing and vote on any proposal to change the compensation of the council members, mayor or senior city staff — like the city administrator, city attorney or city recorder. Transgender teens tell lawmakers they worry about their safety and future in Utah

This year, the Legislature is considering two bills that would limit transgender Utahns’ access to restrooms and locker rooms. The bill Faith spoke to, introduced by Republican Rep. Riverdale mother reportedly confesses to killing baby with ‘punch’

A Utah woman is in jail after she reportedly admitted to beating her 2-month-old baby to death. The 26-year-old woman called police in Riverdale (about 4 miles southwest of Ogden) on Sunday to report her baby was not breathing. According to a probable cause statement, she told dispatchers the child was “‘gone’ over and over.” When police arrived, officers found the infant dead with “multiple injuries that are consistent with aggravated child abuse.” According to police, the woman told them her baby would not stop crying so she gave him a “hard punch … to the head,” and that he eventually stopped breathing. She did not seek medical attention for the baby. The mother told police she had previously hit the baby, thrown him into his crib and pushed down on his chest — and that she knew her actions could hurt him, according to the probable cause statement. The woman is being held without bail in the Weber County jail for investigation of aggravated murder. The Salt Lake Tribune generall
