Police kill a Bluffdale man who reportedly pointed a gun at them
Police shot and killed a Bluffdale man on Wednesday after, they said, he pointed a gun at them during a medical call.
According to the Saratoga Springs Police Department, which provides police service to Bluffdale, first responders were called to a home near 15000 South and Castle Valley Drive (3250 West) at about 8:30 a.m. because of a reported medical emergency. When paramedics and police officers contacted a man in a basement bedroom, he reportedly raised a handgun and pointed it at them.
Three officers fired their guns at the man, whose name has not been released, hitting him multiple times. He was taken to Riverton Hospital, where he died a short time later. No one else was injured.
Police did not say if the man fired his gun, or how many times the officers fired their weapons at him.
Three Saratoga Springs police officers were placed on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.
This was the second police shooting in Utah this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune. There were 25 police shootings in the state in 2023.
