Ezra Klein: The unlikely bookstore of my dreams

Hình ảnh
I remember when Barnes & Noble first opened in my hometown. Before that, we had a cramped Crown Books and some lovely, but limited, libraries. Barnes & Noble was a revelation. There was something wondrous about a room with that many books, each of them a doorway to unknown worlds, ideas and lives. That’s still the feeling, for me, of walking into a great bookstore: limitlessness. I was, as you might suspect, a bookish and awkward child. My father, bless him, began taking me to Barnes & Noble three, often four, nights a week. I’d camp out in the fantasy section, paging through spinoffs in the extended “Star Wars” and Dungeons & Dragons worlds, wishing there were more entries in the “Dragonriders of Pern” series, crestfallen when the announcement rang out that the store would soon close. As I got older, the books changed, but the habit didn’t. I went through a phase of obsessively reading car magazines, which Barnes & Noble also carried, and then periods where I’d p...

‘Recortes de impuestos históricos’ significa que el dinero no se gasta en otros lugares de Utah

Hình ảnh
To read this story in English, click here.

Hawon Jung: Women in Korea are sick of being ‘baby-making machines’

After trying for over a year to persuade more South Korean women to have babies, Chung Hyun-back says one reason stands out for her failure: “Our patriarchal culture.” Chung, who was tasked by the previous government with reversing the country’s plummeting birthrate, knows firsthand how tough it is to be a woman in South Korea. She chose her career over nuptials and children. Like her, millions of young women have been collectively spurning motherhood in a so-called birth strike. A 2022 survey found that more women than men — 65 percent versus 48 percent — don’t want children . They’re doubling down by avoiding matrimony (and its conventional pressures) altogether. The other term in South Korea for birth strike is “marriage strike.” The trend is killing South Korea. For three years in a row, the country has recorded the lowest fertility rate in the world, with women of reproductive age having fewer than one child on average. It reached the “ dead cross ,” when deaths outnumbered bi...

Pili’s late layup lifts No. 9 Utah over No. 8 UCLA 71-69

Alissa Pili drove to the rim for a go-ahead layup with 0.8 seconds left to give No. 9 Utah a 71-69 win over No. 8 UCLA on Sunday at the Huntsman Center. Pili scored 23 points and had nine rebounds to lead Utah (18-2, 8-2 Pac-12), which rallied twice closed the game on a 7-0 run. Issy Palmer tallied 14 points and five assists for the Utes, and Dasia Young chipped in 11 points. Emily Bessoir scored 17 points and had six rebounds to lead UCLA (17-5, 6-4). Kiki Rice added 11 points, and Londyn Jones and Gabriella Jaquez chipped in 10 points apiece. Utah trailed most of the first half, struggling with turnovers, but climbed ahead of UCLA 48-43 early in the third quarter on a 12-4 run, capped by Pili’s back-to-back baskets. The Bruins countered with four unanswered baskets, with Bessoir and Jones combining to make three 3-pointers and fueling a 13-0 spurt that gave UCLA a 56-48 lead late in the third quarter. But in the fourth quarter, the Bruins shot just 3-of-13 from the field and Uta...

Jamelle Bouie: Ron DeSantis likes his culture wars for a reason

Hình ảnh
Here’s a question: What does Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida think about Medicare? Medicaid? Social Security? The Affordable Care Act? DeSantis has built his national political image on well-timed and strategically chosen battles. First it was opposition to COVID mitigation strategies and vaccine mandates. Then it was open hostility toward LGB (and especially) T. Floridians and anything and anyone deemed woke. Now it is an escalation of both moves, aimed at seizing the right flank in the Republican presidential contest, which has already begun to move away from behind-the-scenes jockeying to open competition between rivals. DeSantis says he wants to ban vaccine mandates and restrict mask rules and make Florida a safe haven from what he calls a “biomedical security state.” He also wants state universities to provide the number and ages of students who have sought or received treatment for gender dysphoria, which critics argue is the governor’s first step toward banning those services. Michelle Goldberg: Transgender kids deserve private lives, too

Hình ảnh
Last year, I interviewed Marci Bowers, president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, for a piece I never ended up writing about youth gender transition. A trans woman, Bowers is a surgeon and a gynecologist who has delivered thousands of babies and performed thousands of vaginoplasties; one of her patients was trans reality star Jazz Jennings. When we spoke, Bowers made an argument I think about often: that progressive taboos around discussing some of the thornier issues involved in treating young people with gender dysphoria, including the reality of detransition, are self-defeating. “We don’t look unified,” she said. “We look like we’re hiding something.” I ended up abandoning the story I was working on because other writers beat me to it, which left me, honestly, a little relieved. It’s not that I was worried about being canceled; getting yelled at by people on the internet isn’t fun, but it comes with the job. Rather, I’d worried that examining the spike ...

Victim in Enoch murder-suicide told friend she was worried, dad was acting ‘strange’

Enoch, Utah • A newly unsealed search warrant reports that before eight bodies were found in an Enoch home, one of the daughters texted her friend saying she was worried because her dad was acting strange. Tausha Haight, her five children and her mother, Gail Earl were  believed to be shot and killed by Tausha’s husband, Michael Haight, in early January. Officials have been tight-lipped on a timeline for when the murders may have occurred as an investigation is underway. However, neighbors told police officers that they had spoken to some of the family members the night before they were found dead, a search warrant states. “We were also told that one of the daughters texted a friend stating her dad came home, was acting strange, and she was worried,” the search warrant continues. A judge granted permission to take multiple iPhones, including one found on the bedside table of the oldest daughter, Macie. Another phone was found near Macie’s bed and multiple phones and tablets...

Avremi Zippel: Utah SB 87 would harm the victims of crime

Hình ảnh
If you’re a citizen of Utah, you’re probably aware that we’re in the thick of the 45-day legislative session. When sweeping policy changes are debated and ultimately enacted (or not) for the benefit of all three million of us. Each year, you’ve got your headliners. The bills that capture the lion’s share of attention, due to the impending impact the potential law might have. There’s another bill out there that’s not really angling for your attention. Doesn’t have the most dramatic sounding name. “ Criminal Prosecution Amendments .” You don’t hang out with a lot of criminals, so this probably doesn’t really affect you, right? Oh, so very wrong. You probably know someone in your life that has been the victim of a felony or class A misdemeanor. You’ve probably read news articles of the horrific crimes that Utahns have suffered — especially children. Under the current statute, a crime victim who is the main witness in a criminal proceeding will be cross-examined by defense counsel at a...

Ross Douthat: Five rules for an aging world

Hình ảnh
There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who believe the defining challenge of the 21st century will be climate change, and those who know that it will be the birth dearth, the population bust, the old age of the world. That kind of column opener is a hostage to fortune. If I’m wrong, it might be quoted grimly or mockingly in future histories written with New York underwater and Texas uninhabitable. But it’s important for the weird people more obsessed with demography than climate to keep hammering away, because whatever the true balance of risk between the two, the relative balance is changing. Over the past 15 years, some of the worst-case scenarios for climate change have become less likely than before. At the same time, various forces, the COVID crisis especially, have pushed birthrates lower faster, bringing the old-age era forward rapidly. The latest evidence is the news from China this past week that its population declined for the first time since the Great Leap For...

Belonging to the Utah Legislature makes you powerful, George Pyle writes. But it doesn’t make you smart or kind.

Hình ảnh
“Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” — Luke 23:34 As with most religious writing, there can be many interpretations of this key biblical phrase. The idea that the Son of God thought that it was a good thing for people — powerful people — to act out of ignorance would probably not be a good way to read it. Unless one is a member of the Utah Legislature. The list of issues on which the Republican super-majority of the Legislature proudly wears its thickness on its sleeve, waving it about for all to see, is long. A lot of it has to do with the natural world and the environment. Denial of climate change. Clinging to coal production as a viable source of revenue and electricity. A blind renunciation of the facts about the relationship between predators and prey, which causes our Legislature to pour money into efforts to stop the reintroduction of wolves into the landscape on the totally bogus argument that not having any wolves about will improve t...

Paul Krugman: Don’t try to appease the economic terrorists

Hình ảnh
A few days ago, I received an automated text from my bank. For some reason, the bank’s algorithm flagged a valid charge on my debit card as potentially questionable; the text asked me to verify the purchase. In a rational world, raising the federal debt limit would be regarded as the equivalent of typing “1″ in response to that text — acknowledging a purchase that you have already made. No, raising the debt limit doesn’t give the president free rein to spend whatever he wants. It simply allows the government to honor its promises, which include everything from paying interest on its debt to sending checks to Social Security recipients. These promises, duly authorized by Congress, exceed the expected amount of taxes and other revenue, so they must be met, in part, through borrowing; but that’s normal operating procedure, and financial markets are happy to lend us the money. Unfortunately, a quirk in the U.S. budget process requires Congress, having enacted budget legislation, to vote...
