Denver • When an NBA team loses, you will often hear coaches and players bemoan their lack of execution and precision. They’ll say they had a good plan, they just didn’t see it through well enough. Utah Jazz guard Collin Sexton invoked that very premise Friday night, following the team’s 117-101 loss to the Nuggets . Provo • Confidence is a buzzword that the BYU Cougars are in search of right now. “We have done some really good things in the recent past to show they can be confident,” head coach Kalani Sitake said with his team in the midst of a three-game losing streak. “I think we focus on that and focus on the things the players have done well in the last three weeks and build off that. Confidence is not just momentum-built.” However, if BYU is going to work through the problems that have seen the Cougars allow 600 yards per game the last two weeks, it is going to require more than just confidence. And if the Cougars’ defense is in disrepair, maybe those answers have to come from the offense. BYU’s defense has been on the field about 77 more plays than the offense overall through two-thirds of the season. That amounts to an entire extra game’s worth of snaps — and it gives BYU almost no chance to win. So, one possible solution could be to have the offense have a greater time of possession.

A Springville teenager who was struck by a pickup truck while walking to school on Tuesday morning has died from her injuries. Lilly Warren, a 17-year-old senior at Springville High, was hit near 620 S. Canyon Road at about 7:44 a.m. According to Springville police, the driver remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The teenager was taken to Utah Valley Hospital, where she died on Wednesday. A 60-year-old man has been charged with shooting another man in the head and killing him after the two argued over a cigarette outside a Salt Lake City motel. Joseph Marquez has been charged in 3rd District Court with murder, possession of a gun by a restricted person and obstruction of justice, all felonies. According to the charging documents, Marquez is “subject to an enhanced penalty” because “on at least two previous occasions,” he was convicted of violent felonies — burglary and robbery. In both cases, Marquez was sentenced to 1-15 years in prison and later paroled. At about 10 a.m. on Oct. 11, police responded to a report of a shooting at the Wasatch Inn at 1416 S. State Street. Washington • The COVID-19 pandemic spared no state or region as it caused historic learning setbacks for America’s children, erasing decades of academic progress and widening racial disparities, according to results of a national test that provide the sharpest look yet at the scale of the crisis. Across the country, math scores saw their largest decreases ever. Reading scores dropped to 1992 levels. Nearly four in 10 eighth graders failed to grasp basic math concepts. Not a single state saw a notable improvement in their average test scores, with some simply treading water at best. Those are the findings from the National Assessment of Educational Progress — known as the “nation’s report card” — which tested hundreds of thousands of fourth and eighth graders across the country this year.
