19 year-old driver arrested after hit-and-run, fatal auto-pedestrian crash

A 19 year-old driver was arrested early Sunday morning after police say they were involved in a hit-and-run crash that was immediately followed by an auto-pedestrian crash that left a man dead. Taylorsville Police tells FOX 13 News that the incident began shortly after 2:00 a.m., when officers were called to reports of a hit-and-run crash at a McDonald’s restaurant, located at 5400 South 3800 West. A short time later, officers received a second call reporting an auto-pedestrian crash at 4900 South 4015 West that was later found to involve the same vehicle and driver. The 19 year-old driver stopped and attempted to aid the victim, a man between the ages of 35 and 40 who had been on the side of the road prior to the crash. Read the full story at fox13now.com. BYU’s ‘welcome to the Big 12′ moment ends in a double-digit loss to No. 23 TCU

Fort Worth, Texas • The Big 12 did BYU no favors for its first assignment in a new conference. On the road against undefeated TCU, the Cougars paid their dues as the newcomers of the league in an 81-67 loss. They went down by 20 in the third quarter and were overwhelmed by the No. 23 team in the country. “Welcome to the Big 12,” head coach Amber Whiting quipped. “I mean, it was good for our girls to experience what is going to happen when they step out on the court every single night out. There are no easy games. There are no games off. Every single player we face is going to be good. I thought was a really good challenge for us.” All three of TCU’s top scorers finished in double digits. Sedona Prince, an Oregon transfer, had 25. Madison Conner added 21. Agnus Emma-Nnopu ended with 14. BYU also struggled with former Baylor guard Jaden Owens as she had 15 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. The combination of Prince and Owens in ball screens gave BYU difficulties most of the game

No. 12 Utah goes cold in Colorado and loses to No. 8 Buffaloes

The good news for the No. 12 Utes: Star forward Alissa Pili was able to return to the game after suffering an apparent calf injury in the team’s Pac-12 opener. The bad news: Utah’s high-powered offense did not return with her. Utah saw an eight-point lead turn into a 76-65 loss to the No. 8 Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday afternoon. Point guard Ines Vieira dropped in a layup to make the score 61-53 with 8:18 to play in the fourth quarter. The Utes wouldn’t score again until the 3:41 mark, while the Buffs went on a 13-0 run. “Every game I want to do what I can to help my team win. Colorado had a lot of runs on us and we just couldn’t keep up,” Pili said. “They got momentum and they weren’t missing so when we weren’t capitalizing on our end it hurt us.” In the interim, Pili left the game with what appeared to be a leg injury. The forward, who finished the game with 27 points and 10 rebounds, clutched her calf after fighting for a loose ball and was seen trying to stretch her leg whil

A conspiracy theorist may be on Utahns’ ballots for president after suing the state

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a conspiracy theorist and independent presidential candidate, is one important step closer to being on Utahns’ ballot next fall. Kennedy has met the 1,000 signature requirement needed to qualify for Utah’s 2024 general election as an independent candidate, according to Ron Buckley, Salt Lake County’s voter services manager. CBS News first reported the story Thursday evening. With the signatures hurdle complete, Kennedy can officially file to run as a presidential candidate with the Utah lieutenant governor’s office between Jan. 2 and March 5, Buckley told The Salt Lake Tribune. The March deadline is the result of a lawsuit Kennedy and others filed earlier this month against Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson arguing the state’s previous Jan. 8 deadline was too restrictive. Neither the lieutenant governor’s office nor Kennedy’s campaign responded to a request to comment on Friday morning. Kennedy visited Salt Lake City in November , where he discussed conspiracy the

Utah’s flu activity is ‘rapidly’ increasing, data shows, as COVID-19 and RSV also continue to rise

Respiratory virus season is in full swing, with rising COVID-19, RSV and flu activity, and state health officials predict more increases in infections and hospitalizations as we get deeper into winter. This past week, health officials saw a “rapid” increase in flu activity. That means the number of people showing up to emergency rooms across the state with flu-like symptoms increased dramatically, outpacing both COVID-19 and RSV patients, according to the Department of Health and Human Services dashboard . Most of those visits were for patients between the ages of 5 and 24. Despite the rapid increase, the current levels of flu-associated hospitalizations in the state are considered “moderate” and the levels of outpatient flu-like illness rate are considered “low.” Health officials also saw increases in COVID-19 and and RSV activity. Wastewater sites across the state — 91.4% of them — are showing elevated levels of the coronavirus, and 48.6% of sites are showing increasing levels, a

The best movies of 2023, topped by Emma Stone’s riskiest role ever

Hình ảnh
After two years of a pandemic that drove moviegoing out of the theaters and further into our homes and streaming services, the best thing in movies in 2023 was rediscovering that going to the movies was fun again. A trip to the moviehouse became an event — something that used to happen in the days of the double feature in the ‘50s, or when “Jaws” and “Star Wars” ushered in the blockbuster era. But when movie lovers can catch their favorites on Netflix or Disney+, sometimes just weeks after a theatrical run, it takes a lot to get people off the couch and into a theater. In July, people filled movie theaters because of the counterprogramming of two movies that would seem to have distinctly different audiences: Greta Gerwig’s frilly comedy “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s atomic biopic “Oppenheimer.” The scheduling, meant to cancel each other out, instead raised both films — and made the “Barbenheimer” juxtaposition a reason to see both movies. Two more events were caused by women for

Utah’s Ja’Quinden Jackson enters the transfer portal

Following an early practice the lead-up to Utah’s appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl, oft-injured running back Ja’Quinden Jackson revealed he was feeling a bit conflicted about his future with the Utes. “I’m definitely playing in the bowl game, but I haven’t made a decision [beyond that] if I was going to stay or leave,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune. He’s made a decision now. Four days after the Utes’ 14-7 loss to Northwestern at Allegiant Stadium, Jackson entered the transfer portal, signaling his intent to depart the program, per a report from The Athletic. Utah RB Ja’Quinden Jackson has entered the transfer portal, @TheAthletic has learned. Hot-handed BYU Cougars add even more offensive firepower, move up in AP poll

The nation’s top 3-point shooting team just got a little better. The BYU Cougars, who moved up three spots to No. 14 in the Associated Press Top 25 men’s basketball poll on Monday, already lead the NCAA in making 12.8 triples per game. Now enters Dawson Baker. The UC Irvine transfer had missed most of the season with a foot injury before making his debut against Georgia State on Dec. 16. Last week, Baker doubled his workload, logging 18 minutes in a win over Bellarmine. He also shot 2 for 4 from behind the arc. “The thing I love about this team is that when we don’t make shots, we keep shooting,” Baker said after the 101-59 victory over the Knights. “It was a great team win and it’s fun to get out there and get some extended minutes and have an impact on the game.” The Cougars made 16 3-pointers in the win over Bellarmine, the seventh-highest tally in program history. Baker, a career 37 percent shooter from distance who averaged 15.3 points per game last season at Irvine, said hi

Opinion: ‘Fairytale of New York’ isn’t like any other Christmas Song

London • I fell in love with “Fairytale of New York,” the indelible Christmas song by the Pogues, before I’d heard a note. I grew up in the boarded-up, bombed-out Northern Ireland of the Troubles. There wasn’t an abundance of galleries in Derry, where I lived, at the time, and my father would take me to a record store where the sleeves were one of my main early experiences of art. I’d spend hours escaping into the alien worlds of prog rock and heavy metal. The sleeve of “Fairytale” was different. It was black and white and spare. There was a photograph of a man resting his head on his drink, and his drink on a window. There was a spectacular metropolis outside but he wasn’t looking at it. He seemed impossibly cool, like some wayward, hung-over angel, sick of heaven. I found out later he was Spider Stacy, who played tin whistle in the Pogues. There was adventure and longing in that image, which was based on a Burt Glinn photograph of Sammy Davis Jr. from 1959. As in the original, th

Why the exclusive Wasatch Peaks Ranch resort wants to make its case to the public

Hình ảnh
An excavator on cat tracks led a parade of yellow construction vehicles lumbering down the smooth blacktop that connects the private Wasatch Peaks Ranch to the rest of civilization. In their slow march, they passed the skeletons of grandiose new homes and a scattering of trailers and trucks where the village for the ultra-luxe ski and golf resort is planned. Next to those, a blanket of untouched snow covered the recently completed, not-yet-played 18-hole golf course designed by Tom Fazio . Ed Schultz, the managing director of Wasatch Peaks Ranch, winced as he drove his black truck around the parade. “It hurts,” Shultz said, “seeing the equipment leave.” A week earlier, a 2nd District judge issued a preliminary injunction against the resort, effectively stopping all construction and development in its tracks. So, except for the construction of roof coverings to preserve the rough-framed homes and what Schultz described as a few projects that would adversely affect the environment if

Opinion: Why Biden could lose Georgia next year

Far from the hustle of modern Atlanta and its rapidly growing suburbs is an older Georgia, a rural land of cotton fields and vacant storefronts, of low-wage jobs and shuttered swimming pools, of underfunded Black colleges and American promises ever deferred. In 2020, strong turnout among Black voters in these isolated regions of the state was key to the coalition that turned Georgia blue and ousted Donald Trump from office. Although Atlanta and its suburbs have drawn much of the national attention, Black Democrats in rural Georgia were just as critical: Voting in large numbers in 2020, they reduced the margin of victory in Republican strongholds. Three years later, before a presidential election that could determine whether the United States slides toward autocracy, there are signs this coalition is on the brink of collapse. Many Black voters say President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party have so far failed to deliver the changes they need to improve their lives, from higher-paid j

No offense, but … well, no offense dooms Utah in Las Vegas Bowl loss to Northwestern

Hình ảnh
Las Vegas • After three quarters of somnambulant play and next to no offense, Utah came alive in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Las Vegas Bowl against Northwestern at Allegiant Stadium … And lost 14-7. Running back Micah Bernard, playing for the first time since an early-season injury, got the Utes on the board with a fourth-quarter touchdown. The Utes wouldn’t score again. Northwestern quarterback Ben Bryant, who briefly left the game following a scary hit, returned to throw what proved to be the winning touchdown, a 19-yard dime to Bryce Kirtz. Utah’s defense had a strong performance, but could not make up for the Utes’ lack of offense, as they managed only 211 total yards in the game, and a mere 73 through the air. With starting offensive linemen Keaton Bills and Satoa Laumea, and receivers Devaughn Vele and Mikey Matthews all gone, and quarterback Bryson Barnes off-target for most of the day besides, the Utes simply never could garner much momentum. They had one final try

Georgia State smashes Aggies in Idaho Potato Bowl

Utah State football coach Blake Anderson had said he viewed Saturday’s bowl appearance as the first game of next season. After how things went Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Anderson and the Aggies will certainly prefer to leave this one in the past. Georgia State cruised to a 45-22 victory over Utah State, leaving the Aggies to finish 6-7 on the year. The Panthers scored 21 points in the first quarter, tying a Famous Idaho Potato Bowl record. They would continue to run through the USU defense most of the day. Quarterback Darren Grainger finished with 257 yards passing and three touchdowns. And Georgia State running back Freddie Brock rushed for 276 yards, helping the Panthers average 7.9 per carry Saturday. Suit filed by five death row inmates challenging Utah executions is dismissed

A district court judge has dismissed a lawsuit that challenged Utah’s death penalty — nine months after it was filed by five men who were sentenced to death in the state. The suit argued that the Utah Department of Corrections’ methods to carry out executions — by both lethal intravenous injection and firing squad — violated sections of the Utah Constitution, court documents state. The suit named the Department of Corrections, Gov. Spencer Cox, former Corrections Director Brian Nielsen and other correctional officers as defendants. Third District Judge Coral Sanchez ruled Friday that the suit was “filed untimely” and that the plaintiffs failed to “state a claim upon which relief can be granted” under the state rules of civil procedure. Sanchez granted the defendants’ dismissal of the case. The Utah Supreme Court had already affirmed the death sentences of the men who filed the suit — Ralph Menzies, Taberon Honie, Troy Kell, Douglas Carter, and Michael Archuleta — according to cour

Utah Eats: How to ‘charcuteski,’ and the state’s favorite holiday candy

To get the newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday, become a subscriber by going to sltrib.com/newsletters . Hello, Eaters! With the holidays quickly approaching, people are eating lots of yummy Christmas candy. And according to data from two different websites, they have clear-cut favorites when it comes to that Christmas candy. Let’s dig in. CandyStore.com , which says its findings are based on 16 years of bulk candy sales data, says Utah’s very favorite Christmas candy is (*drumroll*) Hershey’s Kisses . It says the state’s second-favorite Christmas candy is something called “reindeer corn,” which I’d never heard of and apparently is just red, white and green candy corn — gross. The website says Utah’s third favorite Christmas candy is M&M’s, which, OK. But they better be red and green. The plot thickens, though. A candy report from HubScor
