As a gay man who is actively involved in Pride events and LGBTQ-centered fundraisers, I recognize that I have been selfish. As a cisgender, white and privileged member of society, I’ve concerned myself with Pride and activism as it pertains to me and in celebrating my sexuality and freedom to live my authentic self. The “T” in LGBTQ had previously seldom crossed my mind — but this year, regretfully for the first time, I noticed the lack of “T” representation from the community at large during Utah Pride celebrations. I also realized that I don’t really know many trans individuals in my social or professional circles. It hit me this year just how self-absorbed and unaware I have been. I am part of the problem, I need to do more. The trans and nonbinary communities — the smallest and most vulnerable sectors under the LGBTQ umbrella — are being attacked. A federal jury found former Olympic speedskater Allison Baver guilty Thursday of federal charges that accused her of acquiring a $10 million Paycheck Protection Program loan to bankroll an entertainment company that prosecutors said had no employees or payroll at the time she applied. Baver was convicted in Salt Lake City late Thursday of two counts of making false statements designed to influence a bank, one count of money laundering and one count of contempt. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 30, court records indicate. Removing one’s criminal history from their government record began to cost just $65 per application starting in 2022 because of a pilot program designed by Rep. Jim Dunnigan, R-Taylorsville. Salt Lake City celebrations for Independence Day and Pioneer Day will go off this year with less of a bang and more of a buzz. City officials stated this week that drone shows will replace traditional fireworks displays for the two holidays as a way to combat fire danger and protect air quality. “As temperatures rise and fire danger increases, we must be conscientious of both our air quality and the potential for wildfires,” Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in a news release. “The summer holiday shows are a mainstay for Salt Lakers, and we’re excited about adapting to new technology which will provide a safe alternative for our residents and visitors.” The Independence Day drone show will be Saturday at Jordan Park. The Sundance Institute is bringing back its free summer screenings for Utah audiences, pooling them into a single weekend to create what’s essentially a mini-festival of independent films. Nine screenings — all movies that premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in January — will happen over four days, July 26-29, the institute announced Tuesday. A Utah County deputy who struck and killed a Brigham Young University student in 2021 pleaded down to a misdemeanor Friday, effectively canceling his felony manslaughter trial that was scheduled to begin Monday. The deputy, Joe Richardson, 54, was initially charged with manslaughter in 2022 in connection with the Provo crash that killed 22-year-old Joseph Spencer. Richardson pleaded not guilty to the charge on Dec. 13, according to court documents. On Friday, Richardson pleaded guilty to negligent homicide, a misdemeanor, as part of a plea in abeyance agreement, according to court documents. He could face up to a year in jail, documents state. But since his plea will be held in abeyance for 18 months, the charge may ultimately be dismissed if he follows the terms of the agreement during that time.
