Ogden Mayor Caldwell won’t run again: ‘It’s time for me to do new things’

Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell, who had been quiet thus far about his plans this election cycle, won’t run for a fourth term as leader of the city. “It wasn’t tough,” he told the Standard-Examiner on Friday in announcing the decision. “It’s time for me to do new things.” The announcement comes as the 2023 mayoral campaign is already unfolding. Four hopefuls have so far stepped forward to run for the top spot in Ogden, including Taylor Knuth, Angel Castillo and Chris Barragan. Ben Nadolski, a member of the Ogden City Council, has said he plans to run and is scheduled to formally kick of his campaign at an event Friday evening. To read the full story, visit Standard.net. George Sutton: FIDC has a perfect record of protecting insured bank deposits

Hình ảnh
There are several ways to protect your bank deposits, regardless of whether you are an individual or a business and regardless of what happens to your bank. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which was first created in the early 1930s at the low point of the Great Depression, has a perfect record of paying insured depositors. It is a government agency whose primary concern is preventing panics, not avoiding claims or forcing depositors to wait for their money. If you have more than $250,000 in your bank or credit union, you can multiply coverage by putting the money into different kinds of accounts. Checking and savings accounts are each insured to $250,000, even if one person owns both. So are joint accounts, CDs, trust accounts and payable-on-death accounts. Spread your money into four different kinds of accounts and you are covered up to $1 million. Let your bank or credit union help you divide up a large deposit into separate insured accounts. They want to help you so yo...

Scott D. Pierce: Could Jen Shah return to ‘Real Housewives of SLC’ after prison?

Hình ảnh
Could Jen Shah return to the cast of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” after she’s released from prison? That is at least theoretically possible. And it’ll be more possible if her 6½-year sentence is reduced. After pleading guilty to federal charges related to a fraudulent telemarketing scheme that targeted elderly and vulnerable victims, Shah reported to prison in Bryan, Texas, in February. She was scheduled to be released in August 2029. But, according to a Federal Bureau of Prisons database, Shah is now scheduled to get out in August 2028 — but that turns out to be a projection based on credit for good behavior while she’s behind bars. So, no, her sentence has not been officially shortened. As of yet. Honestly, the 6½-year sentence seems kind of short, considering the lives Shah and her cohorts ruined — people who lost their savings while Shah lived “a life of luxury.” According to prosecutors, there were thousands of victims, and Shah was a “mastermind” of the operati...

A Utah soda and dessert shop violated federal child labor laws, U.S. Department of Labor says

A Utah soda and dessert chain has been cited for violating child labor laws — part of a continuing U.S. Department of Labor crackdown that also caught a Utah restaurant supply company with ties to a polygamous sect. Four locations of the Utah-based Sodalicious chain — in Midvale, Orem, Provo and South Jordan — were cited for employing 19 teens for more working hours than federal law permits, the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division announced in a news release issued Wednesday. “The division determined that Sodalicious allowed 14- and 15-year-old employees to work past 7 p.m. when school was in session, after 9 p.m. during summer months, and more than 3 hours on a school day,” the division said in its release. The division said that it assessed Sodalicious with $13,946 in penalties to resolve the infractions. Under federal labor laws, the department said, children under 14 cannot work in nonagricultural settings. Children 14 and 15 cannot work more than three hours on a s...

Patricia Sadoski: We should treat gun violence as the disease it is

Hình ảnh
Another mass shooting. More dead kids and educators. The place of learning and growing in the U.S. is a scary place where instead of the fire drills, they practice hiding to stay alive in the face of big weapons. It’s numbing, disheartening, discouraging and deadly. If it were a disease, we would have the CDC working on it. Ironically, it is a disease. The United States Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center has been studying mass attacks for a few years (2016-2020) and has come to some telling conclusions. The findings are predictable and disturbing. This study found that most attackers were males and gave someone in their orbit the feeling that their behavior might be concerning. Many of the attackers had a history of aggressive or intimidating behavior or of previous violent behavior in their recent past. Most used firearms and many were possessed illegally at the time of the attack. One quarter of them subscribed to hateful ideology or conspiratorial beliefs. Many had ...

Utah Jazz frustrated after playing well can’t prevent another loss

Monday night’s loss was a bit of a weird one for the Utah Jazz. Their 117-103 defeat at the hands of the Kevin Durant-less Suns was their fourth straight, and one which dropped them to 25-40 overall on the season, and two games back of the final play-in spot as they hold on tenuously to a postseason run . Beyond that, it was a difficult result to accept because there were no egregious mistakes, no singular smoking gun they can point to and say, “ That is the reason we lost.” Then again, in some ways, that also makes the loss a bit easier to digest, knowing there were no leviathan errors in need of correction. “I feel for our guys tonight,” coach Will Hardy said afterward. Indeed, in a noteworthy sign of progress, he spent much of Monday night’s postgame session running down not the things that went wrong, but rattling off the components of the game he was happy with. There was effort on both ends. The offense did a good job moving the ball. The defense did a nice job protecting...

Amid strained US ties, China finds unlikely friend in Utah

Hình ảnh
China’s global campaign to win friends and influence policy has blossomed in a surprising place: Utah, a deeply religious and conservative state with few obvious ties to the world’s most powerful communist country. An investigation by The Associated Press has found that China and its U.S.-based advocates spent years building relationships with the state’s officials and lawmakers. Those efforts have paid dividends at home and abroad, the AP found: Lawmakers delayed legislation Beijing didn’t like, nixed resolutions that conveyed displeasure with its actions and expressed support in ways that enhanced the Chinese government’s image. Its work in Utah is emblematic of a broader effort by Beijing to secure allies at the local level as its relations with the U.S. and its western allies have turned acrimonious. U.S. officials say local leaders are at risk of being manipulated by China and have deemed the influence campaign a threat to national security. Beijing’s success in Utah shows “how...

BYU spring practice notebook: RB Aidan Robbins nursing injury, as transfers Bagnah, Heckard get acclimated

Provo • Aidan Robbins understood what he was getting into when he elected to have hand surgery before spring camp. He wouldn’t be able to participate in team segments, or scrimmages. In his first offseason with BYU after transferring from UNLV, most of the live work that is critical to establishing yourself as a clear-cut starter, wouldn’t include him. So, three weeks into spring camp, it isn’t necessarily surprising Robbins’ limitations have left a clear opening for a younger stable of running backs to start jockeying for his carries. But just because it was expected, doesn’t make things any less interesting in an increasingly tight running back battle. Miles Davis, Hinckley Ropati and Sol-Jay Maivia-Peters have all emerged as serious contenders for carries in the 2023 offense. “They are getting a lot of reps. It has been fun to watch those guys,” offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said. “Miles and Hinckley are much improved from a year ago. Sol-Jay is what you saw in the bowl ...

Nicholas D. Kristof: India leads the way with its Barefoot College

Hình ảnh
TILONIA, India — It’s the Harvard of rural India, minus wingtips or heels: a 50-year-old institution called Barefoot College that offers lessons for empowering people worldwide. Maybe even in America. Barefoot College does empowerment as well as any institution I’ve ever seen, and here’s what that looks like in the rural state of Rajasthan: An illiterate woman named Chota Devi who never attended a day of school is hunched over a circuit board, carefully using color-coded instructions to solder resistors and diodes into place. Chota, who has no idea how old she is, is a Dalit, those at the bottom of the caste system once known as untouchables, and from a particularly low-ranking group called the Valmiki who often cleaned human waste. But now Chota is learning how to be a solar power technician. Barefoot College trains illiterate, low-status villagers like her to make solar-powered lanterns and install solar lighting systems. After three to six months of training, they return to their...

Grover Norquist and Rusty Cannon: Removing earmark on income tax would be a win for Utah

Hình ảnh
For the past few years, Utah has consistently experienced significant ongoing surpluses – money that will be collected in excess year after year – in income tax revenues. Despite this, budgeting in Utah has remained difficult. Why? Utah’s Constitution requires nearly all of income tax revenue to be spent on “education.” As has been anticipated for the past few decades, this arbitrary requirement – which is unique to Utah and not in place in any other state – is causing Utah to fall behind. Take a look at the individual income tax, for example. After years of Utah’s flat income tax – currently at a rate of 4.65% – being viewed as competitive, it is now just average. As people and jobs have continued to move out of high-tax states and into states with low and no income taxes, a growing movement of states have been reducing their income tax rates with a goal of phasing them out completely. Today, there are eight states – including Utah’s neighbors Nevada and Wyoming – that do not impo...
