Woman dies during cold night in Zion National Park

Authorities are investigating the death of woman who was hiking overnight in Zion National Park.

According to the National Park Service, the 31-year-old woman and her 33-year-old husband began their permitted 16-mile hike through the Narrows from the top down on Tuesday. The husband reported he and his wife became “dangerously cold overnight” and had symptoms “consistent with hypothermia.”

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures were in the 20s in the area on Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

The couple stopped near the Virgin River, about a mile and a half from the north end of Riverside Walk, a paved trail from the Temple of Sinawava to the Narrows. Early on Wednesday morning, the husband went to get help. Park visitors were helping the man down the trail when they met park rangers. And other park visitors administered CPR to the woman before members of the Zion Search and Rescue Team members arrived, but she could not be revived.

The couple’s names have not been released.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Utah medical examiner, and the National Park Service are investigating the cause of the woman’s death.

The Cheesecake Factory to open a new location in Utah County

A new restaurant is coming to Orem — one that will be familiar to Salt Lake County diners. The Cheesecake Factory has announced that it’s opening a new location at University Place mall, at 575 E.
