The New Orleans police department is hiring civilians to help its officer shortage

Hoping to beef up a dwindling police force amid a rise in violent crime, New Orleans officials announced a three-year $80 million plan Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, offering raises for all officers, free health care and $30,000 in incentive payments for new hires.

The New Orleans police department is overhauling its hiring process to include civilians, as well as eliminate credit score checks and marijuana use questions.
