How the University of Utah protests and police response unfolded, as seen through photos and video

Hundreds of protesters linked arms at the University of Utah on Monday in concert with other students across the country rallying in support of Palestine. Police from several agencies across Salt Lake County responded in riot gear and, by the end of the night, they reported arresting 17 individuals. Law enforcement had declared the gathering, which included an encampment with more than 20 tents, unlawful. Why Utah voters think their quality of life is getting worse

Hình ảnh
Some Utah voters think their state is on the wrong track. That’s according to a new report from the Utah Foundation . Researchers surveyed 656 voter registered Utah voters. Only 42% of respondents thought the state was “headed in the right direction.” That’s a sharp decrease from the past 20 years of survey results. What’s to blame? “I think a lot of it goes back to that top issue of housing affordability, and those big issues of overall affordability,” said Rep. Robert Spendlove, R-Sandy, at a news conference Tuesday. “People just don’t feel like they have the opportunities that they’ve had in the past.” Housing affordability, political dysfunction and the environment are top concerns, according to the report. (Utah Foundation) In a new report the Utah Foundation surveyed registered voters to determine their top priorities. “If you look at the ratio of home prices to median household income it should be about three to one,” Spendlove said, “right now in Utah it’s six to one.” ...

Opinion: A dangerous game is underway in Asia

This month, President Biden threw one of the most lavish state dinners in Washington’s recent memory. Celebrities and billionaires flocked to the White House to dine in honor of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan, posing for photos in front of an elaborate display of Japanese fans. Jeff Bezos dropped by; Paul Simon provided the entertainment. The spectacle was part of a carefully orchestrated series of events to showcase the renewed U.S.-Japan relationship — and the notable transformation of the United States’ security alliances in Asia. The next day, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines was also in the U.S. capital for a historic U.S.-Japan-Philippines summit, during which a new trilateral security partnership was announced. Both events were directed at the same audience: China. Over the past several years, Washington has built a series of multilateral security arrangements like these in the Asia-Pacific region. Although U.S. officials claim that the recent mobiliza...

Utah Democrats to nominate an anti-Biden congressional candidate — only because he promises to step aside

Utah Democrats plan to nominate an anti-Joe Biden candidate for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District on Saturday who has already promised he will step aside and let the party pick a replacement to take his spot on November’s ballot. Brian Adams came under fire from a variety of Democratic organizations , including the Young Democrats of Utah and the Disability Caucus, for claiming Jan. 6 rioters were being “politically persecuted” and criticizing President Biden for facilitating an invasion at the southern border. Opponents were pushing the party to not nominate a candidate and leave the spot on the ballot vacant, since Adams was the only Democrat to file to run for the office, currently held by U.S. Rep. Celeste Maloy. A Chinese firm is America’s favorite drone maker — except in Washington

Hình ảnh
The drones circled over the caves and crevices scattered around the mountain trails in northern Utah, feeding real-time video back to a search team on the ground looking for a missing hiker. Nineteen minutes later, they had her coordinates, bringing the rescue — a drill — closer to conclusion. “In this kind of environment, that’s actually pretty quick,” said Kyle Nordfors, a volunteer search and rescue worker. He was operating one of the drones, made by the Chinese company DJI, which dominates sales to law enforcement agencies as well as the hobbyist market in the United States. But if DJI’s drones are the tool of choice for emergency responders around the country, they are widely seen in Washington as a national security threat. DJI is on a Defense Department list of Chinese military companies whose products the U.S. armed forces will be prohibited from purchasing in the future. As part of the defense budget that Congress passed for this year, other federal agencies and programs ar...

Last chance for Utah skiers as final ‘significant’ snow expected at resorts this weekend

Hình ảnh
Is that a raindrop? Or is it a tear shed for the last snowstorm of the 2023-24 ski and snowboard season? The time of year has come when temperatures in Utah are no longer cold enough to freeze the precipitation falling from the sky. Even in the Cottonwood Canyons, where peaks stretch to 11,000 feet, the sun is winning out. So, for those diehard snow seekers who haven’t yet cast aside their ski poles for their hiking shoes, this weekend’s storm will likely be their last taste of powder until at least October. For number crunchers, it definitely will be. But for the sake of record keeping, Utah’s ski season officially spans Oct. 15 to April 30. So, resorts have until Tuesday to pad their seasonal snowfall totals. And this storm will help. “There will likely be additional storms in May,” Evan Thayer, the Utah forecaster for OpenSnow.com , wrote in a text, “but there is a good chance that this will be the last significant [more than a foot of snow] storm of the season for the high elev...

Parleys Creek fuel spill: Semitruck crash dumps diesel into water

Emergency crews responded to a fuel spill in Parleys Creek early Thursday that was caused by a semitruck crash on Interstate 80. The truck lost control at about 4 a.m. and jackknifed into a concrete barrier on I-80 near milepost 133, just south of Mountain Dell Reservoir and the Parleys Water Treatment Plant, Utah Highway Patrol spokesperson Cameron Roden said. The truck was hauling food, but Roden said the crash ruptured the vehicle’s fuel tanks and spilled about 150 gallons of diesel fuel near Parleys Creek, which is a protected watershed . function onSignUp() { const token = grecaptcha.getResponse(); if (!token) { alert("Please verify the reCAPTCHA!"); } else { axios .post( "https://ift.tt/lfhF3gz", { token, env: "PROD", } ) .then(({ data: { message } }) => { console.log(message); if (message === "Human 👨 👩") { document.getElementById("submit-btn").removeAttribute("disabled"); } else { console.log("ROBOTO...

Utah NHL players and execs give first impressions of Delta Center and Salt Lake hockey fans

Hình ảnh
The Utah NHL team had a whirlwind of a first day in their home. Players and their families, coaches and other staff members landed at Salt Lake City Airport at around 10:30 a.m. and received an uproarious reception from hundreds of youth hockey players . They went to their hotel for a while, then toured Zions Bank Basketball Campus and the Delta Center, where they’ll start play later this year as a new hockey franchise. And when they saw the ice on the arena, the design of the seats and everything in between, it seemed like they were already imagining what it would be like to play there. “It looks unbelievable,” right wing Clayton Keller said. “It’s kind of unique with the seats kind of being right on top of you. Everything that we’ve heard is the building is always super loud. They’ve had 250 straight sellouts for the Jazz. So that’s super exciting.” function onSignUp() { const token = grecaptcha.getResponse(); if (!token) { alert("Please verify the reCAPTCHA!"); } else...

West Jordan man says his dog caused him to shoot his neighbor

A West Jordan man who has been arrested for firing a rifle through the floor of his apartment, wounding a neighbor, blamed the shooting on his dog. On Saturday at about 3:30 p.m., police received a report of a shooting at the Upperwest Apartments at 3283 W. Jordan Line Pkwy. When officers arrived, a woman who lives there told them she had been struck in the arm by a bullet that came through her bedroom ceiling. The bullet grazed the woman’s forearm — it drew blood, but she was not seriously injured and declined medical attention, according to a probable cause statement. When officers went to the apartment above, they stopped a man who was walking down the hall. The 20-year-old said he lived in that apartment, and at first denied that he had fired a gun. Later, according to police, he made an “excited utterance” that he was “removing his gun from the top rack when his dog jumped on him,” and that his hand “slipped … and he fired the gun.” He later told investigators that his dog jum...

Park City snowboarder accused of trying to sneak onto Texas flight home at SLC airport faces federal charges

A Texas man who authorities say took a picture of another person’s boarding pass and tried to sneak onto a Salt Lake City airport flight home after a snowboarding trip to Park City is now charged with national security crimes. A federal grand jury this month indicted 26-year-old Wicliff Yves Fleurizard, of Leander, Texas, on charges of stowing away on an aircraft and access device fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah. Fleurizard was arrested March 17 after he successfully boarded a Delta Air Lines flight bound for Austin, Texas, using a cellphone photo of another passenger’s boarding pass. Once on the plane, he opened an emergency equipment storage door, charging documents say. A flight attendant who saw Fleurizard open the storage door then directed him to the plane’s front lavatory, which Fleurizard stayed inside of for the remainder of boarding. When he exited the lavatory, he then made his way to the plane’s back lavatory. By the time he exit...

Utan Red Rocks fall short of NCAA gymnastics national title

Vault has been up and down for the Utah Red Rocks over the years. At times, it has been the event that advanced them in the postseason. At others, it’s been the reason for disappointment. On Saturday, an NCAA National Championship title for Utah hinged on vault yet again — this time, needing to hold onto a small lead by showing out on the event. Unfortunately, they couldn’t quite get it done. The Red Rocks finished third in the national championship final with a score of 197.800. LSU came away with its first gymnastics championship in school history. Utah held first place by less than one-tenth of a point going into the final rotation. But both Camie Winger and Ella Zirbes, who went first and second, scored a 9.2875 and 9.6750, respectively. Despite Winger’s score being dropped, Utah couldn’t overcome Zirbes’s score combined with the way LSU executed its beam rotation. Savannah Schoenherr of the Tigers fell during her beam routine. But the other five in the lineup scored at least ...

Kevin Bacon meets the Payson students who lobbied him to visit. Here’s how four Utah nonprofits will benefit.

Hình ảnh
Payson • Hundreds of students and volunteers gathered on the football field at Payson High School on Saturday, packing bags with the movie star they spent the entire school year campaigning to come visit. The movie star, Kevin Bacon, told the students that he came to Payson — the school where he filmed the movie “Footloose” 40 years ago — because of them. “When I first heard about #BacontoPayson, I was like, ‘Wow, this is crazy,’” Bacon told the students from a stage set up on the field. “But you were all just tireless, unrelenting in your desire to have me return, and you talked me into it.” What convinced him, he said, was that the Payson students turned the occasion — to celebrate the movie’s anniversary, ahead of the school building’s imminent demolition — into something bigger. Bacon’s visit is part of the community kit-building program, BKxKB, with his charity, SixDegrees.org . The nonprofit, created in 2007, “supports impactful initiatives to sustain and enrich local commu...

Jana Riess: It’s not just women who have a problem with LDS temple garments. It’s men, too.

Hình ảnh
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints revised its temple recommend questions late last week to remove ambiguity about when and how endowed members are supposed to wear their temple garments. The change took effect Wednesday. In sum, the language about wearing the garment “day and night” is back. From 1976 until 2019, the temple recommend interview asked members if they were wearing their garments “night and day as instructed in the endowment.” But from 2019 until this week , the language was changed to, “Do you keep the covenants that you made in the temple, including wearing the temple garment as instructed in the endowment?” Now, the language has been changed once again , this time to, “Do you honor your sacred privilege to wear the garment as instructed in the initiatory ordinances?” That will be followed by an explanation that the garment should be worn “day and night throughout your life.” So we’re largely back where we were in early 2019, with a stated requirement ...

Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen is ready to win. Are the Jazz ready to help him?

Hình ảnh
Lauri Markkanen stands alone in a Utah Jazz uniform. The 26-year-old Finn has been, by far, his team’s best player over the last two seasons. He started in last year’s All-Star game, received All-NBA votes, and kept up that same level of play this season. One of the NBA’s best contracts, he made just $17 million this year, and will make $18 million next year. Literally every team in the NBA would love to have Markkanen on their roster, and especially at that price. Yet ... he’s never played in a playoff game. Early in his career, he simply hadn’t developed enough to be a difference-maker. Now in his prime, his teammates simply don’t have the quality to support his ambitions. Even if the Jazz had just one more player like Markkanen, they’d likely be in the playoffs. So there’s an obvious question: What does Markkanen want the team’s front office to do this summer? “I want to win basketball games and get to the playoffs,” Markkanen said. “Hopefully, at the end, get all the way to t...
