Threat of government shutdown ends as Congress passes a temporary funding plan and sends it to Biden

Washington • The threat of a federal government shutdown ended late Saturday, hours before a midnight deadline, as Congress approved a temporary funding bill to keep agencies open and sent the measure to President Joe Biden to sign. The rushed package drops aid to Ukraine , a White House priority opposed by a growing number of GOP lawmakers, but increases federal disaster assistance by $16 billion, meeting Biden’s full request. The bill funds government until Nov. 17. After whirlwind days of turmoil in the House, Speaker Kevin McCarthy suddenly abandoned demands for steep spending cuts from his right flank and instead relied on Democrats to pass the bill, at risk to his own job. The Senate followed with final passage. “We’re going to do our job,” McCarthy, R-Calif., said before the House vote. “We’re going to be adults in the room. And we’re going to keep government open.” It’s been a head-spinning turn of events in Congress after days of House chaos pushed the government to the

Ike Larsen’s blocked kick seals Utah State win

East Hartford, Conn. • Ike Larsen blocked an extra-point attempt with 40 seconds left and Utah State rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat winless UConn 34-33 on Saturday. UConn had marched 85 yards in nine plays to set up the potential tying kick after Jelani Stafford’s 1-yard touchdown run. But Larsen, who blocked three field-goal attempts last year, went unblocked on the right side to get a hand on the kick. IKE LARSEN! Which team needs Jrue Holiday the most? 6 trade ideas for the veteran PG

Hình ảnh
The Blazers may have traded Damian Lillard , but they likely are not done yet. As part of the package to get Lillard, the team acquired  Jrue Holiday , and the veteran guard represents a chance for the  Blazers  to receive substantial assets to accumulate talent as their  Scoot Henderson -led core grows. There is “a good chance” Holiday is on the move before Monday,  according to  The Athletic’s  Shams Charania , and the trade market for Holiday should end up being  much  wider than the one for Lillard. Though Holiday is not as good as Lillard, every team could use a player like him, and his contract status (a guaranteed $36.8 million this season, plus a 2024-25 player option) makes him an attractive target. He also is eligible to sign an extension now, so the team that gets him could lock him in for longer. Holiday is an All-Star-caliber player who impacts winning on both ends, with a reputation as one of the best teammates in the league. He averaged 19.3 points, 7.4 assists and 5.1

Dairy farmers support school nutrition

Hình ảnh
Our dairy farmers want what is best for students. Their passion for building community and helping Utah youth thrive is evidenced by their spirit of giving. Through Dairy West, dairy farmers have invested nearly $1.3 million dollars over the last five years into our schools to help increase school meal participation, while enhancing their programming, and nutritional offerings. School meals provide our students with the proper nutrition necessary to support their growing bodies and minds. This includes servings from all five food groups. Children may consume as many as 10 meals a week at school, if participating in breakfast and lunch programs, making it essential for these meals to be both delicious and nutritious. Deena Benson, who leads Dairy West’s school meals programming, has over 20 years of experience in school nutrition. Her passion for the health and wellbeing of children has guided her to a long-tenured career within the school system and now at Dairy West. (Chris Bronso

LDS Church reveals when the new hymnbook will be out

Hình ảnh
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will have to wait a few more years for the highly anticipated new hymnbook, but at least they now know its title. A news release Friday revealed that “Hymns—for Home and Church” will become available in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French by the end of 2026, with additional languages to follow. To avoid leaving its members empty-handed, however, global faith will be releasing “some” new songs digitally in “small batches” starting in the first half of 2024, the release added. These songs will include “well-loved music of the church” composed after the 1985 publication of the current hymnbook , including the song “Faith in Every Footstep.” This new release will also include music from other faiths and a few of the thousands of melodies submitted by members. “Many, if not all” of these new additions will appear in the final version of the new hymnbook , which they anticipate will include between 450 and 500 tunes in all.

President Russell M. Nelson won’t be attending LDS General Conference this weekend

Hình ảnh
For more than five years, President Russell M. Nelson’s leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has seemed a whirlwind of activity with a spate of changes , adjustments, announcements, rescissions and reforms. Now, it appears, age is catching up with the global faith’s longest-living prophet-president . He will not be attending in person this weekend’s General Conference at the Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City. “This weekend…I will be watching General Conference through technology just as most of you will,” Nelson said in a news release Thursday. “Three weeks ago, I fell and injured the muscles in my lower back. This episode has reminded me of the reality that things sometimes change quickly in our lives. [A] photo of my counselors and me was taken at the celebration of my 99th birthday. Two days later, I fell.” (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) President Russell M. Nelson poses with his counselors in the First Presidency of The C

Tim Ballard engaged in sexual harassment, ‘spiritual manipulation,’ alleges lawyer representing former OUR employees

An attorney who said she represents “several” former Operation Underground Railroad employees said Thursday that her clients were “subjected to sexual harassment, spiritual manipulation, grooming, and sexual misconduct” at the hands of the anti-human-trafficking organizations’ founder and former head, Tim Ballard. The women lodged complaints with Operation Underground Railroad’s leadership team several months ago, leading to an internal investigation, according to their attorney, Suzette Rasmussen. “We now stand together to affirm the truth behind these allegations,” Rasmussen said, reading from a prepared statement at a news conference on the steps of the Utah Capitol. In a statement Thursday, Operation Underground Railroad said Ballard was immediately placed on administrative leave while it investigated the allegations. “At the conclusion of our investigation, as previously stated by OUR, Mr. Ballard resigned,” the statement said. “Mr. Ballard’s alleged misconduct does not repre

Salt Lake City public radio station KCPW is being sold

Salt Lake City public radio station KCPW is soon to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. What that means for the station’s format is unclear, although there appears to be little chance it will remain a nonprofit, public broadcaster. According to a notice from media brokerage firm Patrick Communications, the minimum bid for KCPW-FM 88.3 is $350,000, and bids must be submitted by Oct. 4, next Wednesday. If more than one qualified bid is submitted, an auction is scheduled for Oct. 9. The sale of the station will include its broadcast license, along with other unspecified assets. Station management could not be reached for comment. KCPW’s owner, Wasatch Public Media, was formed by local supporters of public radio in 2008 specifically to buy the station. It paid $2.4 million for the radio station, which was about to be sold to a religious broadcaster. It operated out of trailers on the Westminster College campus until moving to studios at the Salt Lake City Main Library. “I feel

Portland trades Damian Lillard to Milwaukee Bucks, ending the biggest saga of the NBA’s summer

Damian Lillard is being traded by Portland to play alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Wednesday, a deal that ends a three-month saga surrounding his wish to be moved elsewhere with hopes of winning an NBA title and ending his 11-year run with the Trail Blazers. The seven-time All-Star — a player so elite that he was selected to the NBA’s 75th anniversary team — goes from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks in a three-team deal that sends Jrue Holiday from the Bucks to Portland, Deandre Ayton from Phoenix to Portland and Jusuf Nurkic from the Blazers to the Suns, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because none of the involved teams had announced the agreement. As with all trades, it cannot be finalized until NBA attorneys review the terms and approve the deal. It became known on July 1 that Lillard asked the Trail Blazers for a trade, which he was long speculated to be considering giv

Utah Jazz’s new streaming service launches. Here’s how much it will cost fans to subscribe

Back in June, the Utah Jazz announced both a television deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group that will put non-nationally televised games on over-the-air station KJZZ , as well as the creation of a new media arm called SEG Media (for Smith Entertainment Group, after team owner Ryan Smith) that would bring about a direct-to-consumer streaming service for fans to watch games over the internet. Then in August, the team revealed that streaming company Kiswe would power its online streaming platform next season, but did not disclose any specifics, such as the cost of the platform to fans, or the in-market boundaries of the service. On Wednesday morning, though, the long-sought details were finally disclosed. SEG Media both announced and officially launched Jazz+, which will include live games, exclusive footage, and other original video-on-demand (VOD) content. Subscriptions to Jazz+ are available now at UtahJazz.com/JazzPlus . Some original programming is available immediately. An annu

Salt Lake County to receive updated COVID-19 vaccines soon

The Salt Lake County Health Department expects to receive its first shipment of the updated COVID-19 vaccine this week. Local pharmacies have already received shipments of the new vaccine, so individuals who want to schedule immunizations now can do so through providers such as CVS or Walgreens, Salt Lake County Health department spokesperson Nicholas Rupp said Tuesday. The new vaccine will more closely target COVID-19′s omicron variant, and will restore protections against severe cases of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The county health department advises that everyone 6 months and older should receive the updated vaccine this fall, as long as it’s been at least 2 months since their last dose was received. “The manufacturer and the shipping — it’s not definite,” Rupp said of the vaccine’s expected Salt Lake County arrival. “They’ve told us to expect it this week, but we are prepared that it may be next week.” Rupp said the county health de

Tim Ballard’s business allegedly said LDS apostle was a ‘silent partner.’ Church says he wasn’t.

Hình ảnh
Former high-level employees at Operation Underground Railroad, perhaps the nation’s most prominent nonprofit aimed at fighting sex trafficking, had serious concerns about whether the organization had inflated its rescue numbers, stopped conducting such operations and misled donors in order to raise tens of millions of dollars. Those concerns are spelled out across 75 pages of interviews, emails and documents obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune through an open records request. The records also shed some light on how OUR’s founder, Tim Ballard, allegedly exploited the name of M. Russell Ballard, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to add gravitas to his endeavors. In one investigative interview, a former OUR operative said he was told by the head of a for-profit venture Tim Ballard was launching to control proceeds from movie deals, book sales and speaking fees that the senior apostle was a partner in the company, Sl

Over 20 LDS Church buildings burglarized across Salt Lake Valley

Over 20 Latter-day Saint buildings were burglarized across the Salt Lake Valley this week, and authorities suspect the break-ins could be connected. Herriman police Sgt. Josh Jennings said that the area experienced 22 break-ins since Wednesday — but did not have specific timeline on when each church building was burglarized. Some of the buildings were damaged by the break-ins, police said, but the only item of value stolen was a television. “It’s obviously a pretty good rash of them,” Jennings said. “But at this time, we really don’t have much as far as tips or, or insights on who it might be just yet.” Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who frequent the church buildings reported the burglaries, so Jennings said it’s hard to determine when exactly each break-in occurred — since authorities just have to rely on who was last in the building, and when members noticed something was awry. Police responded to break-ins at the following LDS Church building addresse

Bomb threat cancels drag story time at King’s English Bookshop

Hình ảnh
Utah drag queen Tara Lipsyncki has been hosting all-ages drag story time events at Salt Lake City bookstore The King’s English since June. Lipsyncki was grabbing her keys and on walking out the door to her latest event Sunday morning when she said the shop’s owner, Calvin Crosby, called her to say the store had received a bomb threat. Lipsyncki immediately turned to her husband to relay the information, she said, and they pondered, “‘Is it sad that we aren’t phased anymore?’” (Theadora Soter I The Salt Lake Tribune) Salt Lake City police respond to a reported bomb threat at The King's English Bookshop, at 1511 S. 1500 East on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023. Salt Lake City police temporarily closed off 1500 East between Emerson Avenue and Kensington Street to investigate the threat, which Crosby said was called into police before shop staff showed up Sunday morning. Police in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter, described the call as a “suspicious circumstance” and said a police K
