Two Utah sites will get over $19 million in federal funds to restore public lands. Here’s where it’s going.

Hình ảnh
The federal government is putting $160 million in public lands — including over $19 million to two sites in Utah — to restore the landscapes, restore wildlife habitats and improve water on public lands. The effort is part of President Joe Biden’s Investing in America agenda. In a news conference Wednesday, Bureau of Land Management leaders announced a total of 21 sites would receive funding for restoration. Among those sites were two in the Beehive State — the Upper Bear River in northeastern Utah and for Color Country in southwestern Utah. The Upper Bear will receive $9.6 million in funding, while Color Country will receive $9.73 million. “The restored lands under this effort will increase water quality and quantity, create better habitat for fish and wildlife and provide better recreational opportunities,” said Tracy Stone-Manning, BLM Director. “This effort will also make these lands more resilient to wildfire and drought. Simply put, restored public lands provide more value for...

Rep. Chris Stewart confirms he is leaving Congress, citing wife’s health concerns

Rep. Chris Stewart, saying it’s been “one of the great honors of my life to serve the good people of Utah in Congress,” confirms that he resigning from the U.S House of Representatives — but did not specify when his resignation would be effective. Stewart announced that he was leaving the U.S. House seat he’s held since 2012 on Wednesday morning, the day after The Salt Lake Tribune first reported he was planning to step down . “I can say with pride that I have been an effective leader for my beloved home state, and I’m honored to have played an important role in guiding our nation through some troubled times,” Stewart said in a statement. “But my wife’s health concerns have made it necessary that I retire from Congress after an orderly transition can be ensured.” [READ: What happens to U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart’s seat after he resigns from Congress?] The specificity of those ‘health concerns’ was unclear on Wednesday morning. It's been one of the great honors of my life to repr...

What happens to U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart’s seat after he resigns from Congress?

Hình ảnh
The bombshell news that U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign his seat in Congress adds unexpected intrigue to the 2023 municipal election. When that announcement comes, possibly as soon as Wednesday, it means voters in Utah’s 2nd Congressional District will not only be voting in municipal elections, they’ll be casting ballots for Stewart’s replacement, too. Unlike a midterm vacancy in a U.S. Senate or Utah legislative seat, a replacement in the U.S. House is elected, not appointed. Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution specifies that vacancies in the House of Representatives are filled through an election. However, states have broad discretion on how those elections are held. [READ: Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign from Congress] Utah’s process works like this. Within seven days after the vacancy occurs, the governor issues a proclamation setting the dates and timeline for a special election. In odd-numbered years, like 2023, the primary and special elections occur on t...

LPGA golfers will return to Utah after a 60-year absence

The Ladies Professional Golf Association is finally returning to Utah. The LPGA announced Tuesday that Black Desert Resort near St. George will host an event in the spring of 2025. It’ll be the first time an LPGA event was held in the Beehive State since 1964, when Clifford Ann Creed won the Riverside Ladies Open at Riverside Country Club in Provo. “We are thrilled to welcome Black Desert Resort into the LPGA family as a tournament partner and title sponsor,” Ricki Lasky, LPGA chief tour business and operations officer, said in a news release. “This spectacular venue will undoubtedly provide an incredible test to our LPGA Tour athletes.” Black Desert Resort opened its 18-hole course over Memorial Day weekend. The Tom Weiskopf designed course “prioritizes playability,” as it features fairways between 70 and 100 yards. Breaking: Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign from Congress

Hình ảnh
U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign his seat in Congress, possibly as soon as this week. Multiple sources have confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune that Stewart announced his plan to resign, citing ongoing health issues with his wife. It was unclear what those health issues may be. First elected by Utahns in 2012, Stewart is serving his 6th term in Congress. In 2022, he won reelection over Democrat Nick Mitchell by over 30 percentage points. Stewart will be the second member of Utah’s Congressional delegation to resign mid-term in the past six years. Former Rep. Jason Chaffetz gave up his seat in Congress in 2017 to become a pundit on Fox News Channel. Picking a replacement for the remainder of Stewart’s term will require a special election. Once Stewart officially announces he’s resigning, Gov. Spencer Cox has seven days to set the primary and special election schedule. Under state law, those dates will be the same as this year’s municipal primary and general elections, unless...

Gov. Cox reminds Utahns that Memorial Day carries ‘a responsibility that comes with being an American’

Hình ảnh
As Gov. Spencer Cox stood at a podium near the south steps of the Utah State Capitol on Monday, he referenced the blue sky and the blazing sun. He invoked burgers and hot dogs on grills. He talked about kids getting a day off of school, adults getting a day off of work, and families going shopping to take advantage of some incredible sales. Memorial Day has become, to many, the unofficial start of summer. “It’s a perfect day for a barbecue. It’s a great day to buy a mattress, apparently. I saw this morning that Men’s Wearhouse has their suits on sale. … And I think that’s what most Americans are doing today, are those things,” Cox said. “And I don’t think that’s why this holiday was made a holiday.” As he was surrounded by American flags waving in the light breeze, and flanked by the Utah National Guard 23rd Army Band Brass Ensemble, Cox sought to drive home an important reminder. Memorial Day was — and is — supposed to be about remembering and honoring military personnel who died ...

Peter Gilbert: Supporting our troops means no more blank checks

Hình ảnh
In March, the United States Senate voted to repeal the 1991 and 2002 authorizations for the use of military force (AUMFs). If this passes the House, it will finally end the Iraq wars. When was the last time you thought about the Iraq wars? Why did it take so long to repeal the authorizations to go to war with Saddam Hussein? It is now generally acknowledged that the second Iraq War was a disaster and will probably go down as the single worst foreign policy decision of the United States. It was started under false pretenses, trillions of dollars wasted, thousands of American casualties, a million innocent people dead, and millions of refugees. It destabilized much of the Middle East, creating fertile ground for America’s enemies. Those who made this “mistake” should be held accountable. AUMFs are blank checks given to the Pentagon for the lives of American service members. That is why there is no accountability. Congress is the only institution with constitutional authority to declare...

Utah Utes softball advance to the Women’s College World Series

That last time the Utah Utes softball team advanced to the NCAA Women’s College World Series was in 1994. That year, the highest grossing movie at the box office was “The Lion King.” The No. 1 song on the Billboard Top 100 at the end of the year was “The Sign” by Ace of Base. Bill Clinton was in his first term as president. O.J. Simpson gripped the world with a high speed chase in his white Ford Bronco. But the Utes can now look forward to putting the year 2023 on the banner that displays their World Series appearances. Utah advanced to the College World Series behind a 7-2 win over San Diego State on Sunday afternoon in Game 3 of the Super Regionals at Dumke Family Stadium in front of a record 3,083 fans. The Utes are slated to play Washington in Oklahoma City at a time and day to be determined. Junior Mariah Lopez pitched five innings. She struck out six batters, walked three and gave up one earned run. She threw 100 pitches before Sarah Ladd relieved her. Sophie Jacquez, Abby D...

Biden, GOP reach tentative deal to raise debt ceiling, avoid calamitous U.S. default

Washington • President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached an “agreement in principle” to raise the nation’s legal debt ceiling late Saturday as they raced to strike a deal to limit federal spending and avert a potentially disastrous U.S. default . However, the agreement risks angering both Democratic and Republican sides with the concessions made to reach it. Negotiators agreed to some Republican demands for increased work requirements for recipients of food stamps that had sparked an uproar from House Democrats as a nonstarter. Support from both parties will be needed to win congressional approval next week before a June 5 deadline. The Democratic president and Republican speaker reached the agreement after the two spoke earlier Saturday evening by phone, said McCarthy. The country and the world have been watching and waiting for a resolution to a political standoff that threatened the U.S. and global economies. “The agreement represents a compromise, which means...

Onetime Utah meatpacker is now Mexico’s eyes and ears at Popocatepetl volcano

Hình ảnh
Santiago Xalitzintla, Mexico • When the Popocatepetl volcano reawakened in 1994, Mexican scientists needed people in the area who could be their eyes and ears. State police helped them find one, Nefi de Aquino, a farmer then in his 40s who lived beside the volcano. From that moment on, his life changed. He became a police officer himself, but with a very specific job: watching Popocatepetl and reporting everything that he saw to authorities and researchers at diverse institutions. For nearly three decades, de Aquino says he has been “taking care of” the volcano affectionately known as “El Popo.” And for the past 23 of those years, he has been sending scientists daily photographs. Collaboration between researchers and local residents — usually people of limited means — is crucial to Mexico’s volcano monitoring. Hundreds of villagers collaborate in different ways. Often local residents are the only witnesses to key events. Sometimes scientists install recording devices on their land,...

Latter-day Saint missionary from Alaska killed in bus crash in Brazil

A 20-year-old missionary with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Anchorage, Alaska, was killed in a bus crash on Friday, a spokesperson for the faith said. Elder Isaak Orion Card was riding the bus with three other missionaries in a rural area in Brazil, near the city of Tibagi, when the bus was hit by a semitruck, church spokesperson Sam Penrod said in a news release . The other missionaries weren’t seriously hurt and are being taken care of by local church members, the release said. Card was serving in the Brazil Curitiba Mission, the release stated, and he had been a full-time missionary since October. “We send our love to Elder Card’s family and friends and the missionaries and members in the Brazil Curitiba Mission,” the church said in a statement. “We pray that each will find peace and comfort as they mourn this faithful missionary and reflect on his Christlike service.” This is the fourth publicly reported death of a full-time Latter-day Saint missionary t...

2 men charged with federal hate crime in assault of LDS missionary in Payson

Payson • More than three years after a missionary with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was assaulted in Payson, two men have been charged with federal hate crime offenses. Nathan Thomas, 22, and Sebastian West, 22, both residents of Payson, were charged in connection with the attack. In February 2020, Fox 13 News reported that a Black Panamanian missionary was with his partner on their way to teach a family in their home when individuals wearing dark hoodies and red bandanas approached them. The suspects allegedly mocked and taunted the missionary before physically attacking him, punching him in the head and face, court documents reported in 2020. During the entire assault, the suspects did not target the missionary’s partner who was identified as Caucasian. An investigation began to determine if the attack was racially motivated. Mother of man who killed Gabby Petito said in letter she would help son ‘dispose of a body’

Hình ảnh
Cheyenne, Wyo. • The mother of the man who killed Gabby Petito told her son in an undated letter that she would “dispose of a body” if needed because she loved him so much, according to copies of the note shared publicly for the first time this week by attorneys for Petito’s parents. The handwritten note by Roberta Laundrie that says “burn after reading” on the envelope was released after a Florida judge ruled on Wednesday that the letter could be used as evidence in a lawsuit. The Petitos sued Brian Laundrie’s parents, accusing them of knowing that their son had murdered Gabby Petito and helping him with the coverup for nearly a month before her body was found in western Wyoming in September 2021, causing mental anguish, pain and suffering. The letter reads in part: “We will always love each other. If you’re in jail, I will bake a cake with a file in it. If you need to dispose of a body, I will show up with a shovel and garbage bags.” (Patrick Reilly via AP) This photo provided b...

Sugar House Park reopens to cars

Hình ảnh
More than a month after Sugar House Park was first closed to vehicles because of overflow from Parleys Creek, the park’s roads have reopened. There’s still a possibility that the park, which is designed as a detention basin , could once again close to cars. “But we were told it’s highly likely that that is over now,” Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Department spokesperson Callista Pearson said. In the meantime, flooding officials will continue to monitor the park, which serves as a temporary holding space for Parleys Creek flood control. It was first closed to cars on April 15 as water from spring runoff and upstream reservoir releases crept across the park’s main road. It was then closed to vehicles again on April 22 as the park’s pond began to overflow its banks. “It worked exactly the way it was supposed to, and now it’s open in time for Memorial Day weekend,” Pearson said. “And, I mean, obviously the ducks loved it.” (Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Mallar...

For one group of teenagers, social media seems a clear net benefit

The surgeon general’s warning Tuesday about social media’s “profound risk of harm” to young people included a significant qualification. For some of them, the warning said, social media can be beneficial to health in important ways. For one group in particular — the growing share of young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer — social media can be a lifeline, researchers and teenagers say. Especially for those growing up in unwelcoming families or communities, social media often provides a sense of identity and belonging at a crucial age, much earlier than for many LGBTQ people in previous generations. “It’s a lifeline for folks to receive information and to really see that they are not alone, and there are so many people like them,” said Jessica Fish, who studies LGBTQ youth and their families at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. “They can feel some sense of connection, and realize there is a place for them.” Growing up in a sheltere...

Layton man charged in killings of his wife, in-laws, family dogs

A 34-year-old Layton man was charged Thursday in the killings of his wife, in-laws and three family dogs , according to court documents. Jeremy Bailey called 911 at about 9:45 a.m. on May 19 to tell dispatchers that about 20 minutes earlier, he had killed his wife, Anastasia Stevens, 36; Anastasia’s stepmother, Becky Stevens, 61; and Anastasia’s father, Donald Stevens, 73, according to a probable cause statement. Prosectors believe Bailey actually killed his wife and in-laws earlier that morning, and that after he shot them, he left the home to purchase a box of 9mm hollow point ammunition, charging documents state. Video surveillance discovered by police showed Bailey purchasing the ammunition just after 9 a.m., according to court documents. He then returned home, posted about the killings on Stevens’ Facebook profile, then called 911, prosecutors say. Bailey told dispatchers he “was thinking of doing this” a few days prior to the killings, so he had surrendered his guns to a frie...

53 felonies: Polygamist leader Samuel Bateman now charged with sexually abusing girls he’d claimed as wives

Hình ảnh
After months of investigation and a federal raid of his compound , the leader of a polygamous splinter group on the Utah-Arizona border has now been charged with 53 felonies — including, for the first time, counts accusing him of sexually abusing the underage girls he had claimed as his wives. A new federal indictment released Wednesday against Samuel Bateman, 47, provides new details about the offshoot that Bateman claimed to be appointed by God to lead — and allegations about the explicit conduct with minors that he said was part of the faith. Ten of his followers were also charged with aiding him. The charges from a grand jury this week, which were largely anticipated, will replace the more limited federal counts first filed against Bateman last fall. Bateman is the self-proclaimed leader of a small offshoot of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with followers mainly residing in the sister cities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, known col...

Trees threatened Park City chairlift days before ski patroller died, report finds

Hình ảnh
The pine trees started closing in on the Short Cut chairlift at Park City Mountain a full day before ski patroller Christian Helger slid onto his seat. Lift operators discovered one caught on the cable early on New Year’s Day and its removal caused the lift to open late. That afternoon, as the ski area welcomed more than a foot of snow, another tree started listing toward the haul line. The lift was stopped while that tree, too, was chopped down. Then, overnight, nearly another foot of wet, heavy snow fell at the resort. So even though clearing trees in the winter is “rare” and typically happens fewer than five times a season, according to several employees, resort operators should have known the probability of another tree encroaching on the lift was high. That was one of the conclusions in a report from the Utah Occupational Safety and Health Division. It determined Park City Mountain made a “serious” violation on Jan. 2 when a tree hit the Short Cut lift cable, causing Helger to...
