Utah women’s basketball’s Alissa Pili named Pac-12 Player of the Year, Lynne Roberts Coach of the Year.

The University of Utah women’s basketball team moving through uncharted waters this season also applies to individual awards. Fourth-year Utes junior forward Alissa Pili was named Pac-12 Player of the Year on Tuesday morning, as voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches. A transfer from USC, Pili leads the Pac-12 in scoring at 20.6 points per game on a league-best 59.9% shooting from the floor. Her 45.8% shooting from 3-point range is good for No. 2 in the conference, while residing inside the league’s top 20 in free throw percentage (77.8%) and rebounding (5.5 per game). Pili’s 16 20-point games are the most in the Pac-12 this season. Alongside Pili, Lynne Roberts was Pac-12 Coach of the Year after shepherding the Utes to a share of their first Pac-12 regular season championship, having clinched that on Saturday via an 84-78 victory over Stanford on Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center. At 25-3 overall, the Utes are three wins shy of tying the program single-season record for

Why 'lost their battle' with serious illness is the wrong thing to say

When a dire disease strikes, it's easy to slip into war terms to describe the experience. But that sort of talk turns life into two outcomes: winning and losing. And that's not the way life works. (Image credit: Hanna Barczyk for NPR) source https://oto.oto-login.com/

Ross Douthat: Why you can’t predict the future of religion

Hình ảnh
In an 1822 letter to the physician Benjamin Waterhouse, Thomas Jefferson expressed his confidence that traditional Christianity in the young United States was giving way to a more enlightened faith, much like Jefferson’s own in its rejection of the divinity of Jesus Christ. “I trust,” he wrote, “that there is not a young man now living in the U.S. who will not die an Unitarian.” Less than a year earlier, on “a Sabbath evening in the autumn of 1821″ in upstate New York, a young man named Charles Grandison Finney began a multiday interplay of prayer and mystical experience that led to a moment when, he wrote later, “it seemed as if I met the Lord Jesus Christ face to face ... He stood before me, and I fell down at his feet and poured out my soul to Him. I wept aloud like a child, and made such confessions as I could with my choked utterance.” This experience set Finney on a path that would help bury Jefferson’s confident hypothesis — toward leadership in an age of revivalism, the Secon

Melanie Hall: A brief history of ESG and why Utah lawmakers should support it.

Hình ảnh
In recent years, lawmakers across the country have begun debating the pros and cons of using environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) as a framework for managing financial risk and opportunities. Unfortunately, the conversation provides little context to help us understand what this actually means for businesses, banks or the public. Hopefully, I can shed some light on the topic, including why you should care that it is currently being discussed at the Utah State Capitol. While the term ESG was coined in 2005 to describe an organization’s risk management practices, attention to responsible investment is nothing new. The idea dates back to the 19th century with faith-based investing. It grew in prominence, however, in the 1980s when the anti-apartheid movement exposed the role businesses, pension funds and the U.S. Congress played in sustaining South Africa’s apartheid system and demanded that they divest. This divestment strategy played an instrumental role in ending apar

Brian Moench: Mining bill would be a nightmare for Utah’s future

Hình ảnh
The environmental disaster unfolding in Ohio from a Norfolk Southern train wreck should provide another important lesson for every other state, including Utah. Instead, our Legislature is begging for a much worse environmental disaster of our own. The Ohio debacle was predictable and preventable, and the root cause is unmitigated greed by a handful of rich people. Top brass of the rail industry, enjoying multi-pronged deregulation from the Trump administration, enforced a brutal cost cutting strategy, euphemistically called Precision Scheduled Railroading, that lengthened trains and cut workforce, including safety and maintenance workers. To no one’s surprise, rates of train accidents have increased. “This has been part of a drive by these multibillion dollar companies to wring every penny of profit out of the rail system,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Breathtaking (literally) greed is also the root cause of a Utah looming environmental train wreck, one that is p

Damir Kreilach scores a game-winner in Real Salt Lake’s season-opener

Vancouver, British Columbia • Damir Kreilach scored the deciding goal in a 2-1 win for Real Salt Lake over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Real Salt Lake is unbeaten (7-0-7) in its last 14 openers — the longest streak of its kind in MLS history — despite 13 of those games coming on the road. FC Dallas, which also went into Saturday as winners of 13 straight on opening day, lost to Minnesota. “I think we had a pretty nervous start to the game on both sides of the ball,” RSL coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “I think there was a lot of doubt in every pass. ... I think in the second half we trusted in the game plan, we trusted in each other and the guys executed and played a wonderful second half.” Kreilach’s game-winner came in the 73rd minute to put RSL up 2-1. Jefferson Savarino assisted the goal. The goal was significant for Kreilach, RSL’s captain, who missed most of last season with a back injury. “It wasn’t easy during these 10 months

Family, friends identify victims of Care Flight crash

Reno, Nev. • The identities of the crew and passengers killed in a medical flight crash outside Reno are being released as efforts are underway to raise money for the victims’ families and funeral expenses. Five people were killed in the crash late Friday as the Care Flight crew was transporting a patient to receive medical attention. Authorities began receiving calls about the incident near Stagecoach around 9:15 p.m. and found the wreckage two hours later. The crash occurred amid a winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service in Reno for large portions of Nevada. Scott Walton was the pilot of the PC-12 fixed-wing aircraft and spent many years flying and teaching students around the world. He leaves behind a wife and three young children. “Transporting patients to receive life-saving care was an absolute passion and life’s mission for Scott,” said his sister-in-law, Katie Maguire Walton, on a  GoFundMe page . “He was one of those special people who lit up a room, wh

John Fleck: California wants to keep (most of) the Colorado River for itself

Lake Mead National Recreation Area • If the Colorado River continues to dwindle from the same arid trend of the last two decades, it could take as little as two bad drought years to drive the reservoir here on the Arizona-Nevada border to “dead pool.” That’s the term for levels so low that water can barely flow out of Hoover Dam. Mead is already just 29 percent full, its lowest level since it began filling in the 1930s. But dead pool would be a true disaster for farms, towns and cities from San Diego to Denver that depend on water from Mead and other reservoirs in the Colorado River Basin. Lake Powell, upstream on the Arizona-Utah border, is 23 percent full, the lowest since it filled in the 1960s. The precarious state of the two reservoirs is why the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation called last year for deep cuts in water use — as much as 30 percent — from the seven states that depend on the river — Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California. But as a summer dead

Paul Krugman: Putin and the right’s tough-guy problem

Hình ảnh
A democracy — imperfect, as all nations are, but aspiring to be part of the free world — is invaded by its much larger neighbor, a vicious dictatorship that commits mass atrocities. Defying the odds, the democracy beats back an attack most people expected to succeed in a matter of days, then holds the line and even regains ground over the months of brutal fighting that follow. How can any American, a citizen of a nation that holds itself up as a beacon of freedom, not be rooting for Ukraine in this war? Yet there are significant factions in U.S. politics — a small group on the left, a much more significant bloc on the right — that not only oppose Western support for Ukraine but also clearly want to see Russia win. And my question, on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion, is what lies behind right-wing support for Vladimir Putin? Now, Putin isn’t the only foreign autocrat America’s right likes. Viktor Orban of Hungary has become a conservative icon, a featured speaker at meetings of

5 killed in Nevada medical flight crash outside Reno

Stagecoach, Nev. • Five people were killed late Friday in a medical services plane crash in western Nevada. Officials with Care Flight said their aircraft went off the radar at 9:45 p.m. near Stagecoach, and later learned the plane had crashed and there were no survivors. Stagecoach is located about 40 miles southeast of Reno. The five people on board were a pilot, a flight nurse, a flight paramedic, a patient and a patient’s family member. According to a social media post, Care Flight is a service of from REMSA Health, which is headquartered in Nevada, and Utah-based Guardian Flight. It’s not known if the crew on board the plane were based in Utah or Nevada. “The Central Lyon Fire Department and Lyon County Sheriff’s Department are coordinating with the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the cause of the crash which is under investigation,” the post read. Due to the crash, all Guardian and Care Flight flights across the company, including those in Utah, have been

Paul Mero: LDS Church makes bad decisions based on fear

Hình ảnh
Fear-based decision-making leads to bad decisions. Every time. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – my church – just provided back-to-back examples of bad decisions based upon fear. The first example is its decision to endorse the congressional Respect for Marriage Act (RFMA), thereby endorsing same-sex marriage. Its origin story arose out of fear that the United States Supreme Court might overturn the Obergefell decision that created a constitutional right for same-sex marriage. Justice Clarence Thomas said boo and, out of fear, supporters of same-sex marriage created the RFMA. Interestingly, the RFMA does not protect same-sex marriage from Justice Thomas or a majority of the Court. Only fear would make intelligent people think that a statute could get in the way of a court decision. Even a court decision does not get in the way of overturning a decision. Fear created the RFMA and fear also motivated even more intelligent people to jump onboard for its passage. The RFM
